Students will be given a choice of several courses under each of the five clusters and they are required to take a total of seven courses from the five clusters, with at least one course from each cluster. By taking at least one course from each of the five clusters which are essential to university education, students will have the opportunity to be exposed to a wider variety of subjects so that a broad and balanced foundation is acquired.

Creativity and Innovation (創意與創新)

Courses in this cluster aim at nurturing students’ creative potential by exposing students to various fields (including arts, music, culture, design, visual studies, business and others), and engaging them in a wide interdisciplinary range of activities. This cluster embraces practical, historical, and theoretical courses examining the history, sociology, psychology, and aesthetics of creative activities across a range of domains, including the arts, business, and politics.

Humanities and the Arts (人文與藝術)

This cluster embraces a wide range of courses offering insight into the diversity of expressions of aspects of human existence, with an emphasis on artistic, literary, and philosophical achievements. Courses in this cluster will instill in students an understanding and appreciation of the value and significance of the arts in a very broad sense. Works and achievements arising from a range of contexts and media will be explored in an effort to gain a greater understanding of human expressivity and creativity.

Management and Society (管理與社會)

Courses in the cluster expose students to the conditions and consequences of normative, utilitarian and coercive means of control in organizations and discuss and identify the implications of wider management issues such as managing technology, managing diversity, resources and globalization. Students will also examine issues of governmentality, power and people’s rights. The understanding of the social responsibility and ethics of individuals and corporations in society, including consumers, businesses and business professionals will enable students to establish effective and productive relationship with people in various organizational contexts, and to manage an entity’s resources.

Science, Technology and Society (科學、科技與社會)

Courses in this cluster introduce students to the methods scientists use to explore natural phenomena, including observation, hypothesis development, measurement and data collection, and experimentation. Students will be able to understand how scientists evaluate evidence, employ mathematical quantitative analysis and apply scientific data, concepts and models in problem solving. It is expected that students will develop an understanding of the contested role of science and technology in society, and the interrelation and interaction between science and the humanities.

Values, Cultures and Societies (價值、文化與社會)

Courses under this cluster will introduce students to values at personal, societal and cultural levels. Human values, family values and work values, especially those of the 20th and 21st Centuries will be explored. The development of societies and cultures and related issues will be covered. In many of the courses offered in this cluster, a cross-cultural and comparative approach will be adopted. The cluster also embraces courses offering an enhanced understanding of the relevance of political and sociological inquiry.
